weather in March

I%26#39;ll be in Grand Forks at the end of March and am wondering what the weather is like that time of the year. Is there still snow on the roads? I%26#39;ll be driving on I-29 and then 17 towards Grafton. I%26#39;m not used to driving on snow or ice so I%26#39;m a little concerned.

I lived in ND for 30+ years (just recently moved to KS) and the weather is very unpredictable at the end of March. Whenever ND gets snow, it doesn%26#39;t melt fast because things have been frozen for so long - like October through April usually. I attendend college in Grand Forks so if I were you, check the local weather and don%26#39;t take any unnecessary risks on the good old ND roads. ND doesn%26#39;t use salt on the roads like other states, too expensive for all the snow they usually get. Sand is more popular and doesn%26#39;t work as great as salt. Also, they don%26#39;t pretreat roads when a storm is rolling in. Make sure you have a cell phone when traveling, as it is open, empty country.

Thanks for the advice, lovlifnKS. The move to Kansas must have been quite an adjustment! Did you move to the north or south part of the state?

Does the snow in North Dakota accumulate on the roads and get slick? Or is it more like the dry stuff that blows off the road - like you see in Wyoming? Is there ice on the road or only snow?

We moved to southern Kansas City. It has been a very good change :)

At the end of March I would expect more of a slushy snow. That would totally depend on the temps though. More than likely if there is any snow at all it will be slushy. During the drier winter months it does just blow across the road and there really isn%26#39;t ice because it doesn%26#39;t have a chance to melt and freeze. We get more ice here in Kansas than in ND. I would anticipate good traveling conditions by the end of March. Just check the weather before you go and keep your fingers crossed for no storms. One other thing that might be of concern if there is a chance for snow at the end of March would be a freezing rain turning into snow. This is usual for that time of year and especially that far north. The wind and rain could make black ice on the road where they would appear wet but are really slick with ice. Don%26#39;t worry about all this though. The snow should be pretty much melted by this time and your only worry would be if it does storm which is a hit or miss whereever you go.

Thanks for all the info, lovlifnKS! I sent you more questions by private message.

I went to college in Grand Forks too. When I moved there, I was told that there are only eight weeks a year that you are almost guaranteed no snow. Last two weeks in June, all of July and the first two weeks in August. I didn%26#39;t believe them until we had a ';winter'; where it snowed for NINE months in a row. Yup, it started in September with flurries and went right through to May. Thankfully it didn%26#39;t start sticking right away though.
